ROGERS This last week my wife and I experienced a transition in our lives. We became grandparents for the first time. (First time indicating that I kind of liked it and am hopeful it is not the only time.) Our eldest, who lives out of state, called us to say that she had just left the doctor’s office and was in route to the hospital to have the baby in spite of the fact that she was 3 weeks early. It’s amazing how certain news can instantly impact your life. One moment there is or der and routine, the next cha os is unleashed; you’ve got to get everything in order so that you can leave. I discovered that being told you are about to have a grandchild is certainly one of those chaos life transition moments.
Well, we managed, we went into rush mode, got everything covered and was holding the baby within 36 hours after her birth.
The memory of the moment I first held her will forever be frozen in my mind.
So small, innocent and full of what might be. Potential to be realized, experiences that will shape, mold, influence her in becoming the person she is going to be.
Questions filled my mind.
What will she be like when she grows up? What kind of guy will she marry? (I am already praying for him.) Then I remembered that God already knows and has desires and dreams for her that He has designed especially for my grandbaby.
The Psalmist attests to this when he wrote, “For you created my inmost being, you knit me together, in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully JACK GALBRAITH
and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know them full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” Psalm 139:13-16.
I relax then, I can just enjoy the moment when I first held her. Why? Because God already knows the answers… and though these answers will be revealed as we witness her grow. God knows… He knows… and that’s nice to know. That even though I don’t have all the answers, I know the One who does.
Oh, by the way, would you like to see a picture of my grandbaby?
